Minimum Viable Product

A real MVP solves one specific problem for one specific user type
Building the wrong thing first costs 3-6 months and $50K-$150K on average

Most founders do not fail because they cannot build. They fail because they build the wrong thing first. The term MVP has been watered down to mean "first version" or "beta with bugs." That is not what it means. A minimum viable product is the smallest thing you can build that delivers enough value that someone will pay for it. Nothing more. If you are adding features before you have paying users, you are not building an MVP. You are building a liability.

Why do founders keep building the wrong MVP?

The pattern is predictable. A founder has an idea, sketches out a grand vision, then starts building toward that vision in phases. Phase one becomes a bloated foundation for phase four. Six months later, they launch to crickets. The product works. It just does not solve a painful enough problem for anyone to care.

According to a 2024 CB Insights analysis of failed startups, 42% cited "no market need" as the primary reason for failure. Not technical issues. Not funding. They built something nobody wanted enough to pay for. The root cause is almost always the same: the founder assumed they understood the problem without validating it through actual transactions.

Need clarity on what to build first?

We help founders strip their vision down to the one thing that actually generates revenue. No fluff, no premature scaling. Just a clear path to your first paying customers.

What does a real MVP actually include?

A real MVP has three characteristics. First, it solves one specific problem for one specific user type. Not multiple problems. Not multiple user types. One and one. Second, it is embarrassing by design. If you are not slightly uncomfortable showing it to users, you have built too much. Third, it generates revenue or clear intent to pay within 30 days of launch.

Dropbox's MVP was a three-minute video demonstrating file sync before the product existed. The video generated 70,000 signups overnight. That is an MVP. It validated demand without writing a line of backend code. Buffer's MVP was a landing page with a pricing page that led to a "sorry, not ready yet" message when you tried to pay. The conversion rate told them everything they needed to know.

These examples share a common thread: the MVP was not a product. It was a test. The goal was learning, not launching. If your MVP does not produce measurable learning about user behavior or willingness to pay, it is not an MVP. It is just a small product.

How do you decide what belongs in your MVP?

Start with the riskiest assumption. What is the one thing that, if false, makes your entire business model collapse? Test that first. For most software products, the riskiest assumption is not technical. It is that anyone cares enough to pay.

Map out your user journey and identify the minimum path to value. What is the smallest set of actions a user must take to experience the core benefit? Cut everything else. If you cannot describe your MVP in one sentence, it is too big. "We help contractors generate invoices in under 60 seconds" is clear. "We help contractors manage their entire business" is a death sentence.

Use the "pre-sell before you build" test. If you cannot get 10 people to commit to paying for your solution based on a description or prototype, you do not have an MVP. You have a hypothesis. Commitments can be letters of intent, pre-orders, or deposits. Money is the only validator that matters.

What are the warning signs you are building the wrong thing?

Watch for these red flags. You have been building for more than three months without revenue. You are adding features because they are "easy" rather than because users demanded them. You describe your product with the word "platform" or "ecosystem." You spend more time on infrastructure than user-facing value.

Another warning sign is building for hypothetical future users instead of the ones in front of you. "Once we have enterprise customers, they will need SSO and audit logs." You do not have enterprise customers. Build for the users you have, not the ones you imagine. When Airbnb started, they manually photographed apartments and handled bookings by email.

How do you recover if you built the wrong MVP?

If you have already built too much, the recovery path is straightforward. Stop adding features immediately. Strip your product down to the one thing users actually use. If you are honest, you probably know what that is from your analytics. Double down on that single feature and cut everything else.

Reach out to your existing users and ask one question: "What is the one thing this product does that you would pay double for?" Their answers will tell you what your real MVP should have been. Rebuild around that insight. Many successful companies started as something completely different before finding their core value.

Consider Slack. It began as an internal tool for a failed gaming company called Tiny Speck. The game never launched, but the communication tool they built for their team became a billion-dollar company. They followed where the value actually was.

FAQ

How long should an MVP take to build?

A true MVP should take 4-8 weeks to build, or sometimes no building at all if you can validate with a landing page. If your timeline extends beyond three months, you are likely building too much. The goal is speed to learning, not feature completeness.

Should an MVP be polished or functional?

Functional, not polished. Your MVP should work reliably for the core use case but can be ugly and manual behind the scenes. Polish comes after product-market fit, not before. Users forgive rough edges if the core value is strong.

How do I know if my MVP idea is too big?

If you need more than one sentence to describe what your product does, it is too big. If your MVP roadmap includes features for multiple user types, it is too big. Strip it down to one problem, one solution, one user type.

What is the difference between an MVP and a prototype?

A prototype demonstrates what a product could do. An MVP demonstrates that people will pay for it. Prototypes are for internal learning. MVPs are for market validation.

When should I start charging for my MVP?

From day one. If you are not charging, you are not validating your business model. Free users give you false signals about product-market fit. Start charging immediately.
